The comet laboratory is dedicated to the investigation of physical properties of cometary material. A space environment can be simulated which represents a comet environment. The main focus is on the investigation of granular and icy surfaces.
The central part is a vacuum chamber with pressures down to 10-5 mbar and liquid nitrogen cooling.
Solar light can be simulated with an arc lamp up to an equivalent solar distance of about 0.7 AU
The diagnostics consist of various sensors to measure temperature, thermal conductivity and optical transmission.
