THEMIS

THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) is a NASA mission designed to give the ultimate answer to the long-standing question about the causal relationships in one of the most dynamic chain of processes in the Earth's magnetosphere and to the origin of auroral phenomena. In March 2003 it was selected as a science mission in NASA's Medium-class Explorer (MIDEX) program. THEMIS was launched in the night from 17th to 18th of February 2007 and flies five identical micro satellites through different regions of the magnetosphere with the focus on the Magnetotail.

IWF has been contributing to the concept and design of the THEMIS mission, has been helping in building and calibrating the fluxgate magnetometers, which have been developed under the leadership of TU Braunschweig, and participates in the data analysis, mainly on the magnetotail dynamics.
