CHIMAG is a fluxgate magnetometer especially for Earth field variation and pulsation measurements with 10 pT field resolution, a maximum data rate of 64 Hz and GPS for time synchronization. The instrument was developed by IWF Graz in co-operation with the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) in Los Angeles.
Four instruments were installed for low latitude pulsation studies in China (Beijing, Jinghai, Wuhan and Hainan). Furthermore, three CHIMAG instruments have been installed in Nagycenk/Hungary, Ranchio/Italy and in Castello Tesino/Italy. The main objective of this chain in Middle and Southern Europe - together with several magnetometers installed by the Dipartimento di Fisica of the University in L'Aquila named SEGMA (South European Geomagnetic Array) - is the study of field line resonances for space weather purposes.
